The Download: “Marketing Yourself Like a Boss” with Emerging Midtown
What’s that sound? It’s the 20+ Midtown Raleigh Alliance Emerging Midtown participants tapping away at their keyboards this afternoon to update their personal headlines on their LinkedIn profiles. It’s just one of the high-value takeaways they received at today’s monthly lunch and learn session their membership affords them…

When Tara Lightner Robbins, executive director of the economic development organization, asked me to prepare a session for the group’s young professionals cohort, she asked if I could fill 45 minutes on the topic. Little did she know, I could gab for hours on the topic!

Raleigh’s “Headshot Queen”, Jennifer Robertson, opened “Marketing Yourself Like a Boss” by sharing her professional thoughts on the value of putting your best foot (and side!) forward, quite literally. I echoed that sentiment in my first few minutes, expanding that I encourage those who are serious about how their personal and professional brand is perceived, even go so far as to invest in a full lifestyle photoshoot, if they happen to not work in an industry where an annual update of photojournalistic-style photos are not part of the marketing plan.
After we talked a little photography shop, I led the group through an interactive workshop where we created, or refined, each attendee’s LinkedIn headline. (Shoutout to Kaylea Morrison, my brave volunteer who stepped confidently to the front of the room to workshop her new “I…” statement together in real-time in front of a captive audience!)
Since lunch, unfortunately, can’t last all day, we wrapped things up by discussing ideas beyond the LinkedIn posts feed for engagement, including industry or trade-specific websites and forums, Twitter/X hashtags, and even going so far as to launch your branded website. Sharing is caring, so of course I promised a link to today’s presentation. Are there questions you have about branding yourself as a professional in your field you’d like me to tackle?
