Unleashing Creativity: My First UX Y’all Experience

When designers get together, amazing things happen! I recently attended my first-ever UX Y’all Conference, and let me tell you—it was truly a game changer. User Experience (UX) is all about crafting interactions that feel fluid, efficient, and enjoyable, making it easier for users to achieve their goals. So, what is UX Y’all, exactly? This annual conference, hosted by the Triangle UXPA, celebrates all things user experience, bringing together the vibrant Triangle community of UX professionals to share insights, experiences, advice, and the latest trends in our ever-evolving field.

As I wrapped up my first year as a design associate at Raleighwood Media Group earlier this month, I was eager to learn, connect, and soak in the insights of seasoned designers in their fields. The conference was the perfect opportunity to do just that! From thought-provoking talks to interactive workshops, each session offered fresh perspectives and actionable insights that I could bring back to my work.

Here’s a look at some of the highlights and lessons I took away from this incredible gathering!

🧠 Visual Thinking Strategy (VTS) enhances observation and promotes evidence-based reasoning, deepening our understanding of user needs. By asking open-ended questions like “What do you see or not see?” we encourage users to share their thoughts without the pressure of right or wrong answers. This approach validates their input and helps designers gain valuable insights into what users truly want.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be incredibly useful, but it shouldn’t be relied upon for accuracy or predictability. AI can make mistakes, and its capabilities should not be mistaken for credibility. Always approach its outputs with a critical eye.

👤 Accessibility should not be overlooked when designing for users. Using the POUR principles—Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust—as a guide to accessibility will create a more inclusive and welcoming platform. Starting with questions like “Does the background have enough contrast?”, “Is my website keyboard accessible?”, “Is navigation consistent?”, and “Are my images clearly labeled?” can help ensure your design is accessible to all.

👩‍💻 Design innovation thrives on familiarity and consistency, especially for users who encounter it during challenging times. A compelling example involves commercial trucks, where the familiar sound of the engine starting is mirrored by dashboard gauges that jump before settling. When new tech-driven dashboards were introduced, truck drivers were dissatisfied because they didn’t mimic the movements of their old trucks. To address this, designers updated the new dashboards to replicate the familiar chaos of the gauges, providing a more comforting and recognizable experience for drivers.

UX Y'all Conference

Attending the UX Y’all conference was a transformative experience that reinforced the importance of prioritizing the user in design. The insights I gained on visual thinking strategies, the cautious use of AI, and the significance of accessibility will undoubtedly shape my approach moving forward. A special thanks to Raleighwood for the opportunity to attend!
